Context

A Meccan surah of 3 verses, Al-Kawthar is the shortest surah in the Quran. It was revealed to console the Prophet (peace be upon him) after he was mocked for having no surviving male offspring.

Main themes

Al-Kawthar announces that Allah has granted the Prophet Al-Kawthar (a river in Paradise and an abundance of goodness), commands him to pray and sacrifice, and declares that his detractor will be cut off.

Learning tip

This 3-verse surah is perfect as a first memorization for toddlers. Explain that Al-Kawthar is a magnificent gift from Allah to the Prophet.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

إِنَّآ أَعْطَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْكَوْثَرَ

Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muḥammad], al-Kawthar.

فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنْحَرْ

So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice [to Him alone].

3
إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلْأَبْتَرُ

Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.1
