A Meccan surah of 5 verses, Al-Qadr reveals the grandeur of the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr) during which the Quran was sent down. This night falls within the last ten nights of Ramadan.

Al-Qadr affirms that the Night of Decree is better than a thousand months, that the angels and the Spirit (Jibril) descend with Allah's permission, and that it is peace until dawn.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةِ ٱلْقَدْرِ

Indeed, We sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down during the Night of Decree.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ

And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?

3
لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.

4
تَنَزَّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍ

The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.1

سَلَـٰمٌ هِىَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ ٱلْفَجْرِ

Peace it is1 until the emergence of dawn.
