Context

A surah of 6 verses whose classification (Meccan or Medinan) is debated among scholars, An-Nas is the last surah of the Quran and the second of the two protective surahs. It completes Al-Falaq by imploring divine protection.

Main themes

An-Nas seeks refuge with Allah, the King and God of mankind, against the evil of the retreating whisperer (Shaytan) who whispers into the hearts of people, whether jinn or human.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ

Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,

مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ

The Sovereign of mankind,

3
إِلَـٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ

The God of mankind,

4
مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ

From the evil of the retreating whisperer1 -

5
ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ

Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind -

6
مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ

From among the jinn and mankind."1
