Context

A Meccan surah of 5 verses, Al-Masad was revealed in response to Abu Lahab, the Prophet's uncle, who violently opposed the Islamic message and publicly humiliated the Prophet.

Main themes

Al-Masad announces the ruin of Abu Lahab and his wife (who placed thorns in the Prophet's path). Neither his wealth nor his children will save him from the Fire.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ

May the hands of Abū Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.1

مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ

His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained.

3
سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ

He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame

4
وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ

And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood.1

5
فِى جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍۭ

Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.
